This graduate-level course examines theoretical, pedagogical, and practical foundations of differentiated mathematical instruction within the context of the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards with explicit attention to issues of educational equity, disproportionality, and historical marginalization. The course centers learners with learning disabilities (LD), multilingual learners (MLLs), students of color, and other populations historically underserved in mathematics instruction. Students will evaluate how identity, culture, language, disability, power, and institutional structures shape mathematical development and learning opportunities. The course uses asset-based, culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices and integrates research and perspectives from non-dominant cultural and linguistic groups to develop participants’ ability to design equitable, inclusive learning environments. It is appropriate for all teachers who work with students in grades Pre-K through 12th, fostering an inclusive and culturally conscious educational environment.
