Today, more than ever, our students need to learn how to respect their own culture as well as that of others. In order to do this, we as educators need to teach our students how to be part of a very culturally diverse population while still being proud of their own unique cultural background. In this course, participants will be able to create activities that relate to and promote their students’ different backgrounds and cultures. Activities created will elevate students’ sense of pride in their racial and cultural identities. During each session, participants will complete assignments that focus on promoting student equality in the classroom. Through completing these activities, participants will gain a better knowledge of their students as individuals. This will help them to better relate the material to meet their students’ needs and gain a higher level of respect for their students’ unique differences including race, social class, gender, language, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, or ability. Activities created by participants in this course are developed to be student-centered and are rigorous in content instruction. These activities recognize and promote students’ cultural experiences, knowledge and expressions as assets for teaching and learning. This course is appropriate for all areas of instruction including Special Education, Physical and Occupational Therapists, School Psychologists, the Arts, ELA, Social Studies, Math, Science and Foreign Language, K -12. Educators will create appropriate classroom resources according to their specific area of study.
