University of the Pacific PEDC 1948

This course explores how anchor charts can be used as powerful, student-centered tools to support learning across the classroom. Participants will research, create, and analyze a variety of anchor charts and learn how students can use them as interactive resources, strategy guides, procedural supports, and digital tools. By the end of the course, educators will have a collection of practical, ready-to-use resources they can immediately implement.

Participants will explore the purpose and power of anchor charts as instructional tools that support thinking, independence, and clarity across content areas and grade levels. Throughout the course, educators will research, analyze, create, and view a wide variety of anchor charts used for reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and social-emotional learning. Emphasis will be placed on designing anchor charts that are developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, and aligned to learning standards.

Educators will also learn how anchor charts can move beyond teacher-created visuals to become interactive tools that students actively use during instruction. Participants will explore ways students can reference anchor charts as strategy guides, collaborate with peers during Common Core protocol activities, support classroom procedures and routines, and access learning supports through digital anchor charts. The course will highlight how anchor charts can be used to scaffold learning for diverse learners, including multilingual learners and students with varying learning needs.

By the end of the course, each participant will have created and curated a collection of anchor charts and implementation ideas that can be immediately applied in their own classroom. Educators will leave with a deeper understanding of how anchor charts can foster student independence, strengthen academic language, and support meaningful, student-centered learning experiences.
