Effective tutoring starts with having a solid understanding of student learning goals, family expectations, and instructional practices and strategies that maximize results. Throughout the course, students will actively participate in an online learning community to further develop their understanding of how to build a professional and tutoring program that meets their needs and the needs of students and families. Topics of study will include: identification of student and family expectations for individual tutoring; how to create a tutoring program that meets the individual academic, social, and emotional needs of students; ways to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel; how to keep accurate records; marketing ideas to build a personal tutoring program; instructional practices, strategies, and resources that are essential in a successful tutoring program; ideas for teaching students and parents how to support tutoring goals at home; and how to avoid or resolve any challenges that arise that negatively impact the goals of your tutoring program. Class activities will include forum interactions with other students and discussions, lesson and activity planning, reflection work, research work to identify needs expectations, testing instructional strategies, and other activities and research related to designing an effective and meaningful tutoring program. This course is appropriate for educators in all content areas.
