Eight Essential Tutoring Traits

Students will actively participate in an online learning community to further develop their understanding of the essential traits of effective tutors and develop teaching strategies, lessons, and resources to improve their tutoring skills and help their students become more engaged and successful learners. Topics of study will include effective tutoring practices; the essential traits and skills effective tutors possess; the importance of honesty in the tutoring setting; how to show empathy; the secrets to being prepared for sessions; using enthusiasm to engage students; and other related topics.
Class activities will include online forum activities and discussions, lesson planning, reflection and self-assessment work, research work to identify appropriate instructional strategies, designing engaging learning activities, sharing work with others to collect feedback, and building a portfolio of resources, lessons, and ideas to use in their classrooms and tutoring sessions.
