Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” As educators, we recognize that Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)is at the forefront of how students manage their emotions, form important relationships, collaborate, and have empathy for others for optimal learning to occur.  This course will inspire teachers to integrate the arts in a culturally responsive manner that will embrace all of the asset-based learners in your classroom community.  The Five SEL Competencies; Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making will be explored using the Arts as the vehicle to teach these important life skills to your learners. Contemporary resources and perspectives will help us set the stage for ways we can think about providing an inclusive inquiry-based learning environment fostering a culture of respect and rapport using the Arts to help students succeed and close the learning gap as research has shown.
