As we open the physical doors to welcome students back to our schools after the pandemic, we realize the need for educators to shift their traditional views of family engagement and forge new relationships integrating families as co-creators of their child’s learning. Studies have shown family engagement is essential to student socio-emotional development, academic achievement, and the overall success of their educational journey throughout the school-age years. There has been an institutional gap in professional training, with little opportunities for educators to develop equitable practices to include families in the learning process. Family engagement was seen as an event, limiting opportunities for relationship building and not sustained in practice. Families feel under-valued or may not have the best relationships or experiences with the school system, hindering their thoughts and attitudes about their child’s education. Through the work of Dr. Karen Mapp and her Dual-Capacity Building Framework model in conjunction with the US Department of Education for Family and School Partnerships, educators will learn how to integrate families into the fabric of their child’s education through a dual action-based and sustained practice approach. This course will empower educators to form effective trusting relationships with families to mutually support student and school improvement and achievement.
