Educators today are navigating a significant engagement crisis marked by alarming data: approximately one in four students is now chronically absent, and by the time they reach high school, nearly two-thirds report being disengaged from their learning. This crisis is exacerbated by the constant distraction of smartphones and social media, which make maintaining student focus more difficult than ever. A new variable, artificial  intelligence, has further complicated this landscape by offering students an immediate tempting shortcut to bypass deep thinking. In response, the necessary shift is not toward more technical "AI tool training," but toward a robust model of AI Literacy. By using AI as
a lens to strengthen timeless thinking skills—specifically the ability to analyze, recognize, interrogate, and evaluate—teachers can continue to champion the critical cognitive engagement that remains the foundation of a meaningful education.
