Adams State University

The world has been captivated by one of the most mysterious painters of all time, Vincent Van Gogh. Take a journey that will bring back in time through the life and the legacy of this great master. Study the personal letters of Van Gogh. He wrote over eight hundred letters in his lifetime. He shared these deep personal thoughts and aspirations with his brother Theo and other personal confidants. Learn about his controversial paintings and the biography of Van Gogh the genius and Van Gogh the mad man. Van Gogh suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy as well as other mental and physical conditions that prompted a lifetime of anguish that could only be understood through his paintings. This course will help educators use the works and life of Van Gogh to create meaningful resources to bring back to their individual classroom. Educators will create a wide variety of classroom resources for real use. Meaningful interdisciplinary lessons will be the focus to meet the CCSS and open the door for students to explore the symbolism of one of the biggest artistic influences of all time. This course is appropriate for all educators K-12, psychologists, guidance counselors and social workers.

How will this course help educators to meet the Common Core State Standards?

Educators will learn how to integrate Art and Art History topics across the curriculum to share in the responsibility of teaching literacy to all students with Vincent Van Gogh. They will learn how to teach students to show evidence of learning with informational and complex text using academic vocabulary and multiple sources through motivating multi-media experiences based on their individual grade level and subject specialization. Teachers learn how to integrate Foreign Language and LOTE with a wide variety of multicultural Art History topics to meet the CCSS ELA Standards: Reading, Speaking, Writing, Listening and Language by creating motivating PowerPoint presentations and lesson plans in addition to a plethora of classroom resources to bring back to the classroom for increased student achievement through informational texts.

English and Language Arts

Teachers will learn how to create motivating literature rich experiences to facilitate in their ELA classrooms with Vincent Van Gogh. Art History topics will be bridged across the curriculum to help meet the rigor of the CCSS. Mathematics

Teachers will integrate the topics in Art History to make connections to the mathematical practices to mathematical content in mathematics instruction with Vincent Van Gogh. Teachers will learn how to create a wide variety of classroom resources including lesson planning and PowerPoint presentation to help students learn how to think like a mathematician. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

Science

Teachers will integrate Science into Art History topics to make connections to informational text that will expose students to a broad range of genres and multi-media formats with Vincent Van Gogh. Teachers will learn how to create a wide variety of classroom resources including lesson planning and PowerPoint presentations to help students learn how to think like a scientist. Teachers will use Art History and Science to share in the responsibility of facilitating literacy across the curriculum by creating opportunities for students to read, write and answer questions through multiple sources with the focus on academic vocabulary and technical ideas.

Social Studies

Teachers will integrate Social Studies into Art History topics to make connections to informational text that will expose students to a broad range of genres and multi-media formats with Vincent Van Gogh. Teachers will learn how to create a wide variety of classroom resources including lesson planning and PowerPoint presentations to help students learn about historical events. Teachers will use Art History and Social Studies to share in the responsibility of facilitating literacy across the curriculum by creating opportunities for students to read, write and answer questions through multiple sources with the focus on academic vocabulary.
